Ai-Ling was as good as her word regarding her conspiracy with her mother-in-law. Shortly after she moved to the South Pole, she began to experiment with leather dyes, and in the following year the villagers had to get used to this crazy Earth Kingdom girl who liked to wear their traditional coats in a rainbow of colours. She's particularly proud of the coat that Steph assures her is definitely eggplant.

If pressed, she'd admit the dyes are her attempt to see how far she can push the tradition of her adopted tribe, but the quirks that are just naturally her cause as many strange looks from the villagers. Thanks to Steph, they're used to a woman who can fight and who hunts,but it's still an oddity. And then of course, there's the broadsword a certain Fire Nation colonel gave to her as a wedding gift.  She takes it as a compliment to her natural charm that she gets away with it.

Miki's out hunting with a small group of younger boys at the moment, and Ai-Ling takes the opportunity to prove she can also be a good wife, which is why she's all ready to prepare whatever food he brings home, and is now working on repairs on the igloo they share with his entire family.

Sometime later -- after the hunt has been put away and cleaned and people not Ai-Ling have started cooking -- fur-wrapped arms wrap around her waist from behind to lift her into the air.

Ai-Ling's arms reach up over her head and she clasps her hands around her husband's neck.

"Mmmm hello."

Miki beams at her and kisses her, quite a lot really. It is entirely inappropriate to behave this way in public, which is why he does it.

"Hi. Dja miss me?"

"Yeah."

Ai-Ling works her way around to face him, letting her hood fall back so he can kiss her more. Yes, it's probably stupid, but she doesn't feel the cold as much as, for example, Steph.

"But next time I'll totally see you coming and get a few shots in first."

"Dad got me for you," Miki tells her, lifting mittened hands to cover her ears from the cold and grinning, kissing her nose. "So it's OK, you don't have to."

"I'm so going to take that old man down," Ai-Ling promises, snuggling into him some more. "No one attacks my husband except me."

"That's 'cos nobody else needs to after you're done with me," Miki complains, although it's not a very serious complaint, not when he's busy hugging her tight and grinning.

(He can has a wife! It's been over a year and it still makes him beam like an idiot.)

"Why's he making you mend the igloo, that's not your job!"

"I got bored," Ai-Ling admitted. "It was this or darn your socks, and I'm not doing that."

She's never touched his socks, and she's never going to. Pants, she'll mend. Socks, never.

"You should come teach the boys hunting too," Miki says, grinning. "Or run sock-mending lessons. I think all the women in the tribe are joining your anti-sock party, so they're gonna need it."

He thinks it's awesome -- because it's Ai-Ling doing it.

"You mend socks better than I do," Miki points out. It is true!

... it doesn't say much for her skills, but it is true.

"It's OK though. I'm crazy enough to put up with you anyway." Moar kisses!

"Then they'll all just have to wait until your sister visits again," Ai-Ling says.


"When is your sister visiting again?"

She is never ever ever going to get tired of having a big family.

"Next summer," Miki says, shrugging, and kisses her again. HE IS SO MUCH COOLER THAN HIS SISTER. "Whenever the ice breaks. She wants to come check on Mom, as always."

Boring! Siblings and Moms aren't nearly as awesome as wives. For the record.

But Mothers-in-law and Sisters-in-Law are the BEST EVS and Miki should just get over it.

"We've got enough socks to last til then," Ai-Ling decides. Her mittened hands darw back around to his chest and pull on his coat, tugging him towards the entrance. "Did you get lots of meat?"

"Enough to last the whole tribe for a week. Or you for two days." Miki grins, using the arms around her to scoop her up off her feet.

It's just quicker that way. And then they can get inside quicker and he can be even more improper!

Eeeee pickups. Ai-Ling likes being picked up, so she wraps her feet around his waist and leans into him.

"So we'd better not let you at it if we want any left tomorrow."

"Nah, Haka needs the practice. We'll go out again tomorrow and get some more sealotters."

He likes picking her up. Even if he has to put her down before they can fit inside.

"I'm coming tomorrow."

Ai-Ling brokes no argument, bundling herself right inside and pulling him through.

"I guess, if you have to."

Miki grins. He loves hunting with her.

"Don't make a mess though. Or scare the boys."

"It's not my fault if they get scared."

The igloo's empty. This is why Ai-Ling wastes no time in tugging on Miki's coat again.

Or maybe that's Steph's tendency towards indulgence. She gives them a very decent amount of time before accidentally making noise just outside the door before stooping to wriggle her way inside.

Fortunately for situations like this, the cold means that there's no need to scramble for clothes that they're already partly wearing for warmth. It's easy enough for Ai-Ling to roll off Miki and be fully dressed by the time her Steph actually comes in.

Of course, her sunburnt face is covered in sweat and her hair is loos and messy, but there's nothing she can do about that.

"Hey, Steph," she says, scurrying forward to help her mother in law get inside.

In a tiny village full where all the igloos are one-room-only, there's little that's worth mentioning, really, about finding two teenage newlyweds disheveled and giggly.

"Morning, sweetheart." Steph smiles at her daughter-in-law and at Miki, who's looking just as flushed and rumpled and happy. "Good hunt, Mik? How'd the igloo go, Ai Ling?"

She has news. But it can wait, while the kids are still settling down.

Ai-Ling settles back against Miki as his mother sits down, wrapping his arms around her and brushing out her hair.

"All done," she says proudly, her eyes sweeping the walls around them with a smug air.

From the inside you can't see where she and Sokka had a fight and forgot about it.

"We're going again tomorrow," Miki says, kissing Ai-Ling's hair because it's right there. "Teach the boys a bit more."

"Actually," Steph says, thoughtfully, "you might not be."
