The first thing about patrolling in the 'new' Gotham is the skyline, Tim has found. The earthquake and subsequent abandonment mean that not only is the skyline utterly changed, the strength of any given wall is no longer reliable. More than once tonight he's had to stop himself becoming strawberry jam by a last-minute grapple, when the roofs he'd hooked gave way.
The second is, of course, the city below him. It's quiet -- eerily quiet. The sound of a car engine is a magnet for trouble, and who has fuel to spare anyway? Winter is approaching and with no heating and no lights, it's going to be a hard one.
Of course, that also means that voices seem louder, noises echo longer. The scrape of a hook on gravel, the rapid footsteps of a running woman, the scream of a --
Wait. Scream?

Date: 2008-03-29 04:01 am (UTC)And is running like hell out of an alley where a known gang member is clutching his eye in pain, cursing and shouting at his brothers to follow after her.
And then there are a lot more rapid footsteps.

Date: 2008-03-29 04:08 am (UTC)On the other hand, the ground is rubble-coated and filthy, which tends to slow attackers and attacked equally. It's no great trouble for Tim -- not Robin, just a kid in an oversized coat and hat with most of his face shadowed -- to fall in beside the running girl.
"This way! It's Demonz territory, they won't follow." He gestures at the wall ahead, where the large spraypainted tags indicate that they're at the boundary of two gang-controlled territories.

Date: 2008-03-29 04:11 am (UTC)She's a street girl - it's not too surprising that she's out running at night, but it is impressive how quiet she is at it.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:15 am (UTC)It's lucky bullets are at a premium; it's unlikely any one of the guns being waved actually works.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:18 am (UTC)While the men following rapidly catch up on Tim. And while the guns might not work, the knives and brass knuckles are just fine.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:21 am (UTC)Until the followers also stop, just outside, all of them glaring at him but none making a move to cross the invisible line.
"That was ours, man," one particularly unsavoury and hungry-looking type growls. "You got no right helpin' it."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:23 am (UTC)"You're gonna regret that, pal," another informs Tim roughly, stepping forward and twisting a knife in his hands. "But hell, you look a little bigger than that skinny thing - you'll do jus' as well."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:26 am (UTC)Tim's voice is just as threatening, his crouch just as lethal -- except for the hand he flicks angrily behind his back to Maria. What the hell are you still doing here? Go! Go!
"I know where the territory ends. You ain't welcome here."
"Yeah," the shortest, meanest one says, with a gap-toothed smirk, "but who's around t'see? Security cams ain't worked since the 'quake round here."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:30 am (UTC)There's more scrabbling in the alley as the girl apparently ignores the angry hand-flicks.
The gang is starting to circle around Tim, slow but obvious all the same, all with the same hungry looks as they ready their weapons.
But a sharp click from the alley has them all looking up, behind Tim. And, a moment later, all stepping back.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:34 am (UTC)"See, she might not have a bullet. But she might.
"Do you wanna take that chance?"
He contemplates for a moment, and then smirks a smirk of pure geek-boy joy.
"Do you feel lucky?"
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:36 am (UTC)Besides, it's shortly followed by a CRACK! and an exploding piece of cement to the right of the head of the gang.
"Luck's 'bout t'run out, honeys," the girl's smooth voice informs them coldly, from where she hangs on the building's fire escape.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:39 am (UTC)Of course, the movement started when he realised the woman actually did have not only a gun, but a bullet -- at least one -- and was willing to use them. That puts her high up -- probably in Penguin's employ, or a bodyguard for one of the bosses.
... so why was she running around the Alley at night?
By the time his eyebrow has reached the top of its lift, though, the gang is backing off, muttering angrily. They've apparently reached the same conclusion -- this woman's obviously important, and the hassle isn't worth their time.
The glance a couple of them shoot back at Tim promises retribution, but it doesn't bother him a lot -- not exactly a big deal.
He doesn't turn till they've all left the street entirely, heading back to their own headquarters.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:41 am (UTC)So she can point the gun at Tim.
"An' who th'fuck are you?"
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:42 am (UTC)"Although others might, if you're going to start shooting and then wait while the noise attracts people."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:47 am (UTC)And her frown deepens while she puts the gun away, in a shoulder holster beneath her jacket.
"...m'waitin' f'you to go first," she points out - and takes a hesitant step down on the ladder. No closer for Tim to grab her, though.
But close enough for Robin.
"I ain't givin' you nothing for that, so you know."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:54 am (UTC)"Just tell your friends not to go wandering alone," he asks, and doesn't offer to help her down, either.
"You hungry? I know a place."
Everyone's hungry. But not everyone knows about Leslie's kitchens, or could get in if they did.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 04:57 am (UTC)Everyone's hungry.
"...where?" she asks quietly, starting to slide down the rest of the ladder.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:00 am (UTC)The Blue Boys are run by what's left of Gotham's police department. They're as tough as any other gang, but they're not brutal. And they have access to a lot of stockpiles and supplies that the ferals don't.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:02 am (UTC)...for a few seconds.
She lands on the ground with a soft thump, tugging her jacket closer around her before coming up-- not quite beside him, but within ten feet or so.
"A'ight."
Lead on, Boy Wonder!
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:08 am (UTC)It's through some of the worst territories in the No Man's Land, but her guide walks as if he owns the place, even if he never looks up. And they manage to slide through the most trouble-prone spots without harm.
It's almost as if he knows exactly where all the fights are tonight. Especially when he takes the odd turn-offs, which always ends up being a longer route back to places she knows. But nobody still has city-wide surveillance -- nobody.
Halfway there, a small Asian girl in a similar coat and hat comes up to him and taps his shoulder.
He looks at her, curious.
She shakes her head and makes shooing motions towards a side alley.
Tim frowns. "Change of location?"
The girl nods her head, pleased, and disappears as silently as she came.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:10 am (UTC)But-- food.
"The hell was that about?" she demands, quiet but sharp.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:13 am (UTC)Well, about this, anyway.
"Used to work out of the basement of the Kane building, but that's gettin' close to the edge of Blue Boys territory -- they've been thinking of moving for a while. That's what I'd guess happened. B.G. there doesn't talk much.
"... at all."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 05:14 am (UTC)But her arms cross over her chest, putting a hand close to the holster beneath her jacket.
"We still eatin'?"

Date: 2008-03-29 05:16 am (UTC)Nobody glances twice when they make their way down a winding flight of stairs to a place that has --
-- honest-to-God electric light.
The generator's running noisily in a corner, and the room is full of people, but surprisingly little security for somewhere running electricity. It's underground, and wasn't even visible from the street; maybe that explains it.
Of more interest is the bain-marie full of pies, chips and scallops. Nothing fresh, of course, but it's hot.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 02:32 pm (UTC)He can practically hear her salivating.
"Mi Dios," she gasps and pushes by him immediately to reach for a plate and the biggest scoop of chips she can manage.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 02:48 pm (UTC)"Another stray, Al?" asks the woman at the table behind him. "You got a new one every night, don'cha?" She sounds tolerant, cheerful -- unusual in the world of everyone-for-themselves.
"Ah, they just keep falling int'a my lap, Leslie." Tim shrugs, grinning. "I can't let them go."
"You're a sucker for a pretty face," the woman accuses, smirking.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-29 06:49 pm (UTC)Besides, she's not paying much attention to Tim or Leslie. Not when there's food, hot food, to focus on.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-30 01:51 am (UTC)"Oh. Ew," Leslie says, looking distressed. Tim leans over backwards to pat her hand reassuringly.
"There wasn't any fighting, L. Nobody even got hurt. This stray--" with a gesture at Maria and a smirk -- "turned out to be pretty good in a standoff."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 01:44 am (UTC)Though once she's swallowed, she's pointing at him with her fork.
"Don' listen t'im," she warns Leslie, frowning. "I saved 'is ass back there."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 06:24 am (UTC)"She did," he tells the slightly incredulous old woman. Well ... she thought she did, and at considerable risk to herself. She would have, if Tim had been anyone but who he is.
"Earned her way here."
Leslie shakes her head in fond amusement. "You kids."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 07:40 pm (UTC)It might not be exactly clear what she wants Tim to shove, but the where is fairly obvious.
"Whatever," she informs Leslie with a roll of her eyes - and a full mouth. "Do it again f'it gets me food like this."
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 10:12 pm (UTC)"Al," Tim puts in, with a smirk that says he's perfectly aware that Maria's probably perfectly aware that it isn't his real name. "Ask for Al if you need me."
"Al, right," Leslie agrees patiently. "Do you have any friends you'll want to bring?"
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 10:17 pm (UTC)And half-laughs at the question.
"Looks like you're full enough as it is, don' need anyone bringin' in the crowds," she points out, smirking.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 10:32 pm (UTC)This may or may not be a roundabout way of asking if she's attached to anyone.
no subject
Date: 2008-03-31 11:27 pm (UTC)"I'm from th'Alley. That don't mean I hook or pop out kids," she points out, smirking at him. She's very obviously Tim's age, perhaps sixteen, and apparently defensive about her reputation.
no subject
Date: 2008-04-01 12:10 am (UTC)no subject
Date: 2008-04-01 02:55 pm (UTC)Leslie just smirks.
And that slight knock to Tim's shoulder was utterly accidental.
...as much as it was mocking.
no subject
Date: 2008-04-02 12:21 pm (UTC)The meal is soon over -- too soon, really, but not even Leslie's Bat-augmented supplies are limitless. 'Al' leans back in his chair comfortably -- and for the first time, his hat tilts far enough back that his face isn't utterly in shadow. (THIS IS POSSIBLE IN COMIC BOOK WORLD, HUSH.)
He's wearing a domino mask.
Leslie has disappeared quietly, either in anticipation of this or simply having better things to do. Tim is preoccupied with watching the newly-acquired Stray eat and checking up on everything around them to notice that he's losing an element of concealment.
no subject
Date: 2008-04-02 06:53 pm (UTC)...and then blinking and looking right back at him.
With an incredulous smirk.
"Oh, you have got t'be kiddin' me."
